Karate-Do
(Way of KarateĀ). For
those
looking to stay physically and mentally fit, learn self-defense, and pursue
the deeper meaning of Karate-do.
Karate Classes are hosted several times a week at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center and are open to beginners, advanced students, and those from other styles.
Association
Mumon Karate is associated with the Nippon Budokan and Waseda University in Japan. The Waseda University karate club is one of the oldest in Japan, formed in 1931 under the direction of Gichin Funakoshi . The Nippon Budokan is an important venue for all budo (martial arts) in Japan.
Training with us
Mumon Karate is devoted to teaching karate at its highest level, not only as a martial art but also as a way of life. Mumon Karate is considered a traditional form of the Shotokan based style of karate and strickly adheres to the philosophical and moral foundations developed by Gichin Funakoshi Sensei (1868-1957).
Features and Training.
Training is usually divided into three types of practice:
- Kihon. Fundamentals or Basics.
- Kata. Form or Patterns of moves.
- Kumite Training against an adversary.
In the beginning states of training, students are taught to develop strong basic techniques and stances. The advanced levels of black belt training is more fluid and include:
- (Tai Sabaki) Whole body movement or repositioning the body to avoid an attach.
- (Irimi) to blend with or enter into an opponent's attack to become one with the opponent's movement
- (Torite) Escaping from an opponent grabbing the hands and body
- (Nage waza) aikido-like throwing techniques.
